Cricket Quotes and Lady Boys

The latest story on my Thai blog site Beyond The Mango Juice has a cricket theme to it. The Lady Boys of Bangkok is a story about a troupe of Thai transvestites who are currently touring the UK performing their Fantasy and Feathers lady boy cabaret show. The gay guys were invited to Hales Barn Cricket Club in Cheshire for a coaching session from club batsman Ben Ormsby and my story has a wonderful photo of the boys in action playing the great game.

One of the comments I received on the post mentioned a couple of famous cricketing quotes from the late great BBC commentator Brian Johnston CBE, and that gave me an idea to search out and post a few of cricket’s great quotes and gaffes. First on the list are Brian’s two most memorable ones.

There’s Neil Harvey standing at leg slip with his legs wide apart, waiting for a tickle – Brian Johnston

The bowler’s Holding, the batsman’s Willey – Brian Johnston

One Day cricket is an exhibition. Test cricket is an examination – Henry Blofeld

Richard Hadlee and Richie Benaud were commentating together. Michael Atherton was hit in the box and Hadlee said “That ball bounced”. Benaud replied with “Which One?”

There are a lot of hookers around the world – Richie Benaud

“Geoffrey (Boycott) is the only fellow I’ve ever met who fell in love with himself at a young age and has remained faithful ever since” – Dennis Lillie

David Lloyd in April 2009 Cricket Quotes and Lady Boys“If this bloke’s a Test match bowler, then my backside is a fire engine” – David Lloyd (photo source Johnlp) on his first viewing of New Zealand’s Nathan Astle.

“She was a lovely lady and quite ample. In fact, Muttiah Muralitharan would have had plenty of room to sign his name” – David Lloyd’s comment on being asked to autograph a lady’s breasts.

“So how’s your wife and my kids?” –  Former Australian wicketkeeper Rod Marsh’s quote to Ian Botham when the latter arrived at the crease.

“Statistics are like bikinis… what they reveal is suggestive, what they hide is essential” – Former India Test batsman and now TV commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu.

I think there are some classic quotes in my list and if you have a favourite of your own, please pop it into the comments box below.

You missed Botham’s reply to Marsh – “The wife’s fine, the kids are retarded.”

Michael thanks for your comment and a reminder of what a great character Ian Botham was. I hope you drop by again and best wishes to you.
