Flamengo’s former Brazilian born goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes de Souza has been charged by police along with eight other people for his involvement in the alleged murder of his former lover Eliza Samudio. Two months ago on June 9th Samudio, 25, disappeared from the Rio de Janeiro hotel where she was staying. Her body has not been discovered but police believe she has been strangled, disembodied and fed to dogs.

Former model and porn star Samudio had previously claimed to police that during her pregnancy the Flamengo goalkeeper and friends had kidnapped her and forced her to take Cytotec which is a pill for treating ulcers, but is also illegally used to induce abortions. During her ordeal she claims Bruno screamed at her:

“If I kill you and throw you somewhere, you’re not going to be found.”

At the time ex Brazilian model Samudio was seeking child support and court approval for paternity tests to be carried out on Bruno to prove he was the biological father of her son Bruninho. The threats continued and it is alleged she was kidnapped in June by Bruno’s friend Luiz Henrique Ferreira Romao and an unnamed teenager.

Some parts were fed to dogs and her last remains buried under concrete. It is claimed Bruno ordered and witnessed her death. The crime was later pieced together after police interviews with a then unnamed teenager after a forensic search revealed specks of blood in Bruno’s car. A 17 year old cousin of Bruno’s was later disclosed as being Romao’s partner in crime.

On July 7th Rio de Janeiro authorities issued a warrant for Bruno’s arrest and after a swoop on his home failed to find him, the former Flamengo captain voluntarily handed himself over hours later. Bruno’s wife, a suspected accomplice had been arrested earlier at their home. Both denied the charges of being involved in the death of Eliza Samudio. Brazil’s most popular football club side Clube de Regatas do Flamengo promptly announced they had suspended Bruno’s €90,000 a month salary.

On August 4th in a state court in Minas Gerais,  prosecutor Gustavo Fantini filed charges against Bruno Fernandes de Souza, his wife Dayanne Souza and seven others all in connection with the planned kidnapping and murder of Eliza Samudio.

Brazil football’s murder and mystery case may yet have a few twists and turns still to come.
